Self-guided walking holidays in England
England is well-known for its green countryside dotted with quaint villages and pretty, thatched cottages. What is less well known is that England is also home to some of Europe’s best walking routes. Trails are invariably clearly marked and very well maintained and there is an incredible variety of landscapes just waiting to be explored.
A walking holiday in the Cotswolds offers the quintessential experience in the ‘classic’ English countryside, starting in Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon. For stunning coastal trails (and the best chance of warm and sunny weather) you can walk the South West Coast Path. The sections in Cornwall and Dorset are particularly spectacular. In northern England, the Yorkshire Dales offer tranquil landscapes of verdant valleys and rugged moors. For a combination of moorland trekking and dramatic clifftop paths, the Cleveland Way is a perfect walking holiday.
For a long-distance route and a real challenge, why not walk all the way across England from the Irish Sea to the North Sea? The Coast to Coast Path crosses three national parks, including the Lake District, and is an experience of a lifetime!
Whichever trail you choose, you can be sure of finding charming market towns with inviting pubs, as well as a wealth of literary and industrial heritage to explore along the routes.
