Self-guided hiking in Bulgaria

For hikers looking for a new destination as an alternative to the Alps or Dolomites, Bulgaria offers an excellent network of hiking trails with scenery that is a match for most places. This proud Balkan nation contains a wealth of spectacular natural scenery, including mighty mountain chains, beautiful green pastures, shimmering glacial lakes, gushing rivers and waterfalls and unique flora and fauna.

Southern Bulgaria, in particular, is dominated by mountains, with several peaks over 2000 m. We offer an 8-day hike in the Rila and Pirin mountains that combines high mountain trail among outstanding alpine scenery with a visit to Bulgaria’s finest architectural treasure; the UNESCO-listed Rila Monastery.

For more gentle hikes, the Rhodope mountains – famed as birthplace of the legendary musician Orpheus – offer some wonderful trails in pastoral landscapes dotted with charming and picturesque villages, not to mention impressive natural features such as the Trigradsko Zhdrelo Gorge and the Dyavolsko Garlo (Devil’s Throat) caves.

Both of our hiking holidays in Bulgaria include hand-picked accommodation, luggage transportation, detailed route notes and maps, as well as private transfers to and from Sofia airport on arrival and departure.
