Hiking on Mount Olympus

Self-guided walking holiday in Northern Greece

A 7-day hut-to-hut trek along the high mountain trails of the mystic Mount Olympus in Northern Greece, one of the world’s most iconic mountains. At 2917 metres, Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece and is revered as the legendary home to the ancient Greek Gods. The lower hiking trails weave through forests and over wooden-bridged river crossings, while the views of the Olympus range, Thessaloniki and the Aegean Sea from its summits are simply stunning.

By staying in the historic village of Litochoro at the start and end of the tour, you will have a chance to immerse yourself in the local culture of this very traditional part of Greece.

The tour starts with a 2-night stay in Litochoro, a lively village at the foot of Mt. Olympus. On your first hiking day you walk through the Enipeas gorge to the sacred monastery of Agios Dionysios. The next morning, starting at the monastery, you will walk through thick forest of pine, and eventually reach the alpine zone and admire superb views over the gorge and the Aegean sea. Your route continues to the Skolio summit at 2,911 m and after descending from the Summit you walk along the so-called ‘Zonaria’ to reach the ‘Mousson’ alpine plain. You continue your descent via the eastern slopes to the new Koromilia mountain hut where you stay overnight. On your last hiking day, you walk down to the church of Agios Konstantinos from where you will be picked up by a taxi and taken to Litochoro.

We just returned from the Mount Olympus trek and cannot give enough praise for the well organized travel experience with Wild Rover. All aspects went off without a hitch! The trek itself was perfect, the schedule well thought out logistically and I appreciate that we had a day trip the first portion and second overnight in Litochoro. Bravo!!

We saw several people with Mount Olympus as their destination, but they totally passed up the loop trail that Wild Rover has you travel on. It was one of our favorite parts of the trek and we saw no people on that portion – only mountain goats! The app worked great once we figured it out the best way to use it. The notes portion of the app, so so. I was happy that we had a printed copy to read over prior to the days walk.

We LOVED our stay at all three huts and especially the Kakkolos Refuge.

Our stay at the Guest House Papanikolaou in Litochoro was amazing, right in town, beautiful, great breakfast, and the nicest people working there as well as the owners. Breakfast was amazing.

Also a big shout out to Niall who hooked us up in Athens at the Novus Hotel and arranged a taxi for us at the airport. It was a relief to not have to deal with it getting in late in the evening after 24 hours of travel and our taxi driver was seriously the best.

We will definitely be enquiring about future self guided walking tours with Wild Rover.

Thank you all again for providing an organized experience with great communication and at a fair price. Its always a challenge putting a trip such as this together without local knowledge and it really takes the stress out of planning.
